How i color and shade

Journal Entry: Sat Sep 15, 2012, 4:39 PM

So :iconkeldeo-corn: wanted to see how i shade and whatever i made a tut on how i shade! its not the best,but...eh.

this is also for all who is interested

First of all,you need SAI. You can download a free trail here :[link]
(of crouse mines ran out T.T)

The tool i will be using for this is:
-pen tool
-curve tool
-watercolor tool
-blur tool

STEP ONE

-Once you get SAI open it(duh) than go to file>open and pick out the drawing you want.( in my case,i had to copy and paste)

-Now you should have three layers: Lineart layer(the top one), Your drawing that your using(the middle one), And the flat color layer(the bottom one)

Note: i will using the lineart to trace my drawing!

STEP TWO

(i went ahead and colored the eyes)

- Ok,you won't need your drawing layer so hide it.(i don't delete it because i might need it).

-Now color your drawing by going to the flat color layer. When i color,i got to my lineart layer and use the magic wand tool.Than i I click on on my drawing and color each selection of it at a time. After that,i'll go back to my flat color layer and use the paint bucket to color(i rarely use the pen). But you don't have to do all of that, you can just color it

STEP THREE

-Once your down coloring, make a new layer above your flat color layer. I called it "Dark" because this is the darkness part of my shading.

-Most people use the watercolor tool to shade,so you might wanna use it.(make sure the first color box is the color your shading with and the last box is white. Also, mess around with the density.) Image and video hosting by TinyPic

* When i do this part,i hide my flat color layer. It's easier for me to find my light source. Some people find their light source by drawing a sun* (You don't have to do this if you don't want to...the whole hiding the flat color layer thing)

-When i get done,i blur the EDGES ONLY to make it smoother. Don't go overboard tho~

STEP FOUR

-Once your done with that, make another layer above the "Dark Layer" and name it "Light" this layer will be used for lighter shading

-Once again, mess around with the density if you want to. Stick with the watercolor and color away. Once your done, blur the edges like last time

(The dark parts is from the Dark layer. Please don't let it confuse you XD. Also,i haven't blur the edges yet.)

*HERE ARE TWO EXTRA STEPS. HOW I DO THE HIGHLIGHTS AND CANDLELIGHT THINGY*

STEP FIVE

-For the highlights, make another layer, name it highlight. Use the pen tool and use a light color(NOT WHITE!).

-Put the highlights where ever you think is right.

- For the candle light effect thingy, make another lineart layer. Choose the curve tool and choose a slightly lighter color. Color alone the darkest part of the drawing.
